Our team of specialists at Periodontic and Implantology Associates offer many advanced dental services, including bone grafting. It is often recommended to improve the success rate of more invasive procedures, and our dentists will do everything possible to make sure you feel comfortable and cared for during your visit.
We generally use human donor bone from a bone bank, where the bone has been treated to make it compatible with any recipient. Human donor bone is extremely safe to use. A bone graft is a surgical procedure that may be required if your jawbone is deficient. You may need a bone graft if your bone density is insufficient to support a dental implant.
While bone grafts are most commonly needed for implant dentistry, they may also be required for certain types of periodontal therapy when bone has been lost due to gum disease. Sometimes the bone is combined with bone that is harvested from another area of the patient’s mouth. After a tooth is lost or extracted, the jawbone begins to resorb, or deteriorate, at the site of the tooth extraction. This must be corrected before the dental implant is placed.
Bone grafting is generally performed at the time of tooth extraction, but is also performed prior to, or at the time of implant placement.
